About ASCE


ASCE (American society Of Civil Engineers) is a professional body headquartered in Reston, Virginia, that represents members of the civil engineering profession worldwide.

With the help of its 145,000 members in 174 countries worldwide, ASCE stands at the forefront of a profession that not only plans, designs, constructs, and operates society's economic and social engine but also does its best in protecting and restoring the natural environment.

ASCE actively participates and strongly believes in imparting knowledge through 8 dynamic institutes and leads with its many professional and public focused programs. It has also set-up 130 Younger Member Groups and International Student chapters in different countries.

History


It was founded in New York City on November 5, 1852, when twelve engineers met and formed the American Society of Civil Engineers and Architects. It was the first national engineering society created in the United States.

In 1869 the "Architects" was dropped from the name, as the architects formed their own society, the American Institute of Architects, in 1857.

ASCE India

American Society of Civil Engineers India Section (ASCE-IS) began in the year 1988 when eight bright Civil Engineers from Calcutta formed the American Society of Civil Engineers - India International Group (ASCE-IIG) to spread the message of ASCE across India.

The Group became very proactive by taking a lead role in organizing technical activities and taking positions on topical issues which could have had a positive impact on the society. The good work was recognized by ASCE and within a year of its formation, ASCE - India International Group was upgraded to an "International Section". The society was then renamed “ASCE-India Section” in 1989. The upgradation was a reflection of creditable work that was performed by the ASCE-IIG.

ASCE-IS is divided into four Regions (East, West, North, and South) operating under a central body of ASCE-IS which has representations from all these four Regions. A revised Constitution and Bylaws are being drafted for ASCE-IS. This interim arrangement has been proposed till the governing documents are final and elections are held.

Student Chapters


ASCE's vision is to position engineers as global leaders building a better quality of life. Comprised of Regional Councils, Younger Member Councils, Sections, Branches, and Student Chapters, the Society is fully engaged in making this a better world by design.

Creating awareness among students worldwide about the prospects of Civil Engineering is one of the many objectives of the ASCE. They plan to complete this objective by starting Student Chapters of ASCE in USA and in universities all over the world. The objectives of a student Chapter is to advance the science and profession of engineering by encouraging the development of student's professional consciousness and by exposing them to the field of engineering. This association also promotes a spirit of unity by providing an opportunity for students to become acquainted with each other and practice working together effectively.

Any 12 students under a set of guidelines can form a student chapter in their university

The kind of things that Student Groups do are -

  1. Host lectures by respected engineers in their area
  2. Work with local schools to explain to children what engineers do
  3. Hold competitions like steel bridge competitions
  4. Work with Engineers Without Borders assist communities in their particular needs
  5. Learn how to conduct meetings and make presentations to clients
  6. Have seminars on how to prepare a biographical statement for a job interview
  7. Have seminars on how to prepare for job interviews

Brigham Young University ASCE Student Chapter

Brigham Young University ASCE Student Chapter was the recipient of the Robert Ridgway Student Chapter Award for excellence in the effective conduct of its affairs as a Student Chapter of ASCE through the ability and professional diligence of the Chapter officers, members, and faculty advisors.

Student Chapter at University of Louisville

Over the past seventy years their student chapter has evolved into one of USA's largest and most active student chapters. They have been awarded the Outstanding Student Chapter Award presented by the Kentucky Section of ASCE 4 times.

The West Virginia University student chapter

The WVU student chapter of ASCE was issued a "2013 Letters of Honourable Mention " which recognizes outstanding student chapters by the Committee on Student Activities of the ASCE. In addition to the prestigious award, WVU-ASCE is annually ranked as one of the top student chapters in USA

VIT Chapter

In India the VIT University ASCE chapter is the most successful student chapter. It was established in 2011 and has been proficient in its portrayal of a student chapter exclusively dedicated for civil engineering, in the college. With various events, guest lectures and workshops ASCE - VIT has managed to attract a large number of the student population.

Events Worldwide


ASCE and different students chapters worldwide conduct events on civil engineering throughout the year. Some of the famous and most esteemed events are-

National Concrete Canoe Festival

In this event students need to construct a concrete canoe within the dimensional constraints. All construction work from placement of concrete, reinforcement and flotation materials is managed by students. The canoe shall pass a flotation test where the canoe floats near the water's surface, when completely filled with water and loaded with two 25-lb. sandbags. It provides civil engineering students an opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience and leadership skills by working with concrete mix designs and project management.

The 2015 competition will be held at Clemson University during June 20-22.

National Student Steel Bridge Competition (NSSBC)

In this event students design and build a steel bridge all by themselves. Students are tested on different parameters such as spatial constraints, material properties, strength, serviceability, fabrication and erection processes, safety, aesthetics, project management, and cost etc. the bridge will be load tested and checked for sway or deflections. There are two levels of competition: conference and national. Conference competitions are held in conjunction with ASCE annual student conferences. Outstanding performance in conference competitions qualifies eligible teams for the national competition. The different categories of competition are display, construction speed, lightness, stiffness, construction economy, and structural efficiency. NSSBC 2015 will be held at University of Missouri-Kansas City during May 22-23.

ICES - VIT

ICES is held at Vellore Institute of Technology. This fest involves many workshops, conferences and events like Nano- housing, The ultimate civil conundrum, and Metro Planner.

Nano- housing : It is a design and techno management event. The idea of this event is to come up with an ideal budget dwelling unit which is practical as well as feasible for urban India. It not only poses engineering challenge but also design, sustainability, economic challenges.

The last date of design submission is 5th of March.

The ultimate civil conundrum : This event will be held in three stages of which the first two are online and the third will be on campus. The problem statement which is already uploaded online is to be answered with any basic designing software. The next problem statement for stage two is on Geotechnical and Reinforced Concrete Design. Problem statement for the last round has to be declared and teams need to present their model at VIT campus for testing.

MetroPlanner :In this event the participant need to design a planned metro network for an actual Indian city. The teams have to take under consideration social, geographical, infrastructural, etc. constraints depending on the city and its population.
